As part of an effort to educate and support the Fresno community, a local orthodontist will be providing his younger patients with a brand new mouth guard.

Started last year by Drs. Greg and Nichole Nalchajian of Nalchajian Orthodontics, “Defend Your Mouth Day” is open to all youths ages 8 to 14. All participating children with an appointment will be gifted favor bags, treated with ice cream and fitted with a “boil and bite” mouth guard. This option of mouth guard is boiled in water where it’s softened and self-adapted to the child when biting down on the heated plastic to offer a custom-made fit.

According to the American Dental Assistant Association, during a single sport season, athletes have a 1 in 10 chance of suffering a facial or dental injury. Dental experts recommend children wear mouth guards to protect their teeth and protect them from concussions and brain injuries.

“It is important parents are aware of the extreme dental trauma and permanent damage that can be caused to their child’s oral health if they do not properly protect their teeth when playing sports,” Dr. Greg Nalchajian said. “Many children refuse to wear their mouthguard for the reason of discomfort or distraction while participating in sports, however it properly fitted, these worries will not be an issue.”

Defend Your Mouth Day will be held on Saturday, Sep. 7 at Nalchajian Orthodontics located at 7501 N. Fresno St., Ste. 105, and will run from 8 a.m. to noon. For more information, or to schedule an appointment, visit https://nalortho.com/defend/.
