New York City-based ice cream company Big Gay Ice Cream is expanding to the West Coast, and Fresno is among the destinations.

Shoppers also can find the brand on grocery store shelves in other California cities that include Los Angeles, San Diego and San Francisco.

The company, known for its distinctive ice cream flavors and ranked as one of the best ice cream parlors in the world by the USA Today newspaper, added three new flavors to its existing portfolio — Banan-o-Graham, a caramelized banana ice cream with graham cracker swirls; Fluffernutter, peanut butter ice cream with marshmallow swirls and peanut praline; and Spicy Choco-Lit, milk chocolate ice cream with spicy fudge swirls and hot cinnamon candy pieces.

Other flavors include American Globs — a blend of fudge-covered pretzels and a fudge swirl, and Dorothy, a mix of vanilla ice cream with vanilla wafer cookies and thick swirls of dulce de leche (caramel).

“We are so excited that Big Gay Ice Cream has arrived on the West Coast,” Doug Quint, founder of Big Gay Ice Cream, said in a press release. “We started in 2009 with a single truck on a street corner in Union Square, New York City and never in our wildest dreams thought our ice cream would spread from coast to coast! Our goal has always been to have a blast with awesome ice cream, and with the new territory joining our party, we’ll all be having more fun than ever.”

Owner Doug Quint started the name out of a desire to be “the happiest ice cream man that ever drove the streets of New York City,” according to the company’s website.

Pints of Big Gay Ice Cream will be available at Savemart, Vons, Albertson’s, Pavilions, Circle K, Safeway and Lucky’s, selling for $5.99.
