Fresno author Mark Arax is the recipient of the James Beard Foundation Award in the category of feature reporting for a story about billionaire grower Stewart Resnick headlined “A Kingdom From Dust.”

The James Beard awards celebrate the year’s top books, broadcast and journalism pieces that highlight food, and are considered the Oscars of the culinary world. The award was recently announced in New York.

The story was first published in California Sunday Magazine last year, and will be part of Arax’s forthcoming book, titled “The Dreamt Land: Chasing Water and Dust Across California.”

Published by Knopf, the book has received praise from critics such as William Francis Deverell, director of the Huntington-USC Institute on California and the West.

“This is a stunning book,” Deverell said. “The Dreamt Land calls up Steinbeck and Didion, but it rests squarely on its own words, memories, and stories beyond mere comparison.”

Arax will launch his national tour of the book with a reading and talk at the Veteran’s Memorial Building in Clovis on May 17 at 7 p.m. Tickets for the event, which will benefit the New Clovis Library, are now available online at www.fresnofol.org/arax. Cost is $10 in advance and $15 at the door. Seating is limited.
