An all-natural commercial dye company will be the first in Fresno County honored by the state for health and safety management and the protection of its workers.

On Thursday, California Natural Color, a subsidiary of E&J Gallo Winery, will receive and raise a special flag recognizing the company for safety programs going beyond minimal Cal/OSHA standards, according to a press release.

The California Voluntary Protection Program, a part of Cal/OSHA, assesses companies for their Star Certification based on management commitment to safety, employee involvement, worksite analysis, hazard prevention and control, health and safety training and continual improvement.

Company applications for this award document both the number of days employees were either not working or on restricted work due to an injury, and the total number of reported safety incidents, according to program guidelines.

Only 69 companies in California are Cal/VPP Star Certified.

California Natural Color on East Olive Avenue in Fresno produces natural food and beverage dyes made from ingredients such as red grapes, carrots, sweet potatoes and more.
