How did you come to position with HealthCare California?
After graduating from Fresno State, I took a job with the U.S. Small Business Administration in Sacramento as a loan officer in its disaster loan program. From there, I landed a job at Oracle Corporation in the Bay Area managing all of the company’s real estate lease compliance for 100-plus offices throughout the United States. After two years, I was offered a similar position with Longs Drug Stores at its corporate headquarters just across the Bay in Walnut Creek. I was with Longs for 10 years where my responsibilities grew to directing the group that managed over 500 Longs stores and other properties. My group was responsible for all real estate lease compliance and financial payments totaling over $100 million a year.

What we do:    We do several things. We provide recovery services for individuals and families who are in the throngs of addiction. We spend hours walking families through the recovery process, meeting with them individually and with entire families. Once the family/addict comes to us, we are with them throughout the entire process. We are with the addict and their families for as long as they need us. We actually drive people to the treatment centers. We search out the best recovery programs for the person. We are very particular on where we send someone. Most treatment centers make a lot of promises about “curing” someone’s addiction. The fact is, there is no cure and the addiction never goes away. How do you change, for example a 15 year addiction in 30 days? There is so much more to recovery than just getting clean. We believe in patient treatment is the place to clean off of drugs, but once a person leaves treatment, the real work then begins. We then provide counseling and psychological services for both the individual and their families.

How do you help people discover the franchise business for them?
We really get to know our clients and what their skills are through a very sophisticated assessment tool that we use. We build for them what’s called a business model, which is what they’re looking for in a business — what their skill set is, what transferrable skills they have, if they’re interested in a business where they’re the manager or if they want to have a manager in place, the number of employees they want, if they gravitate more toward a retail business or something that would be in an industrial park or mobile business. So we look at all the business characteristics of what they’re looking for and their skill set and what they can afford, and then we put together a business model. From the business model, we then look into the businesses that we work with. We’ve already gone through the due diligence and we know that they’re pretty solid businesses. Then we make recommendations.
