Broadband group approved for $150K grant

The California Public Utilities Commission (CPUC) announced on Thursday it has approved a grant for $150,000 for the San Joaquin Regional Broadband Consortium.

“If we do the things we say we’re going to do, we’ll get the same amount in Years 2 and 3,” said Mike Dozier, the lead executive.

The consortium does not deal with construction at all and the funding will be used for the planning aspects of the Central Valley Next Generation Broadband Infrastructure Project.

The consortium is looking at addressing digital literacy, telemedicine and overall access to broadband in the Valley.

Of the 13 regions in California looking for funding, only seven passed through to the final round.

Dozier believes the consortium received the funding because of the network the California Partnership for the San Joaquin Valley offers.

“Out of all the regions we are the most prepared because of the network we have in place,” Dozier said.
