Welty honored with namesake award

Fresno State President John Welty will retire in the summer of 2013 from the position that he has held for more than 20 years.Fresno State President John Welty will retire in the summer of 2013 from the position that he has held for more than 20 years.The Perpetual John Welty Visionary Stewardship Award will be awarded on Oct. 10 to none other than Fresno State President John Welty himself.

Welty, who has been president at the university since 1991, recently announced he would retire in the summer of 2013.

The award now recognizes Welty for his support of small business over the last 20 years through Fresno State's engagement in the region to address issues like health care disparities, economic development, diversity, educational needs and volunteerism.

Welty, 68, was a leader in establishing the Fresno Business Council, the Central Valley Business Incubator, the Central Valley Higher Education Consortium, the Collaborative Regional Initiative, the Regional Jobs Initiative and several other partnerships.

Sponsored by the Central Valley Business Incubator, the inaugural award will be presented during the organization's Central Valley Stock Exchange being held Oct. 10 at the Clovis Veterans Memorial Building.

Also honored during the event will be Fred Ruiz, founder of Ruiz Foods in Dinuba, who will be presented with the Spirit of Entrepreneurship Award for his accomplishments as an entrepreneur and business leader.
