Coming alongside a handful of locations popping up throughout the Valley, a Family Dollar store is slated to open in Corcoran in early summer.
The discount store will sell groceries, clothing, household supplies, health and beauty products and home decor items.
Located on the site of a former lumber yard at 2213 Whitley Ave., the roughly 8,700 square-foot store will sit across from Burnham Smith Park along the city's main thoroughfare.
Kevin Tromborg, Corcoran's assistant community development director, said construction of the store will begin in the middle of June with opening slated for late August or early September.
"Their thoughts were to serve the apartment complexes that had been built over the past few years on the west side," he said.
Besides employing between 20-25 people, Tromberg added that the store is the kind of thing that has been much needed in the city of around 24,813 people where nearly half of the households make less than $35,000 a year.
"We're a small town and any type of chain franchise is usually met well in this city," he said. "They seem to be well organized. They sell products that people want at good prices."
Family Dollar, one of the largest discount retailers in the country, opened its first stores in California last November and plans to open 50 statewide this fall.
In February, the retailer signed a lease for a new location in Madera and is currently building stores in Farmersville and Huron.
Founded in Charlotte, N.C. in 1959, the company has more than 6,800 stores in 44 states.
