George Marcus, a 50-year resident of West Fresno, has opened a new Subway restaurant location near Highway 99 and Fresno Street.
Local elected officials including Fresno City Councilmembers Oliver Baines and Blong Xiong were in attendance today for the official ribbon cutting at 1212 Fresno St.
It is the second West Fresno Subway restaurant owned by the Marcus family. The first opened 11 years ago near California and Fig avenues less than a mile south of the new location.
The new venture was aided with financing from the Fresno Community Development Financial Institution, which is a program of the Fresno Economic Opportunities Commission.
Baines said the traditional banking loan model likely would have overlooked a new Subway in that location, which he said means "more healthy food options for a community that needs it so much."
Marty Page with Subway Development Co. said one has to be a noteworthy operator to get another Subway franchise.
"With Subway, you don't get a second unless you do well with your first," Page said.
The new Subway also means six new West Fresno jobs.
