The award, from the California Resource Recovery Association, will be presented during the organization's annual statewide conference and tradeshow in Oakland on Aug. 8.

Peña's Disposal has been handling construction and demolition recycling throughout Tulare County and seven of its incorporated cities as part of a contract with the county last year.

In the first three months of the contract, the recycling rate for such waste went to 82 percent compared to 56 percent under the previous hauler. In one month, the rate was as high as 89 percent.

Peña's Disposal, a family-owned company established in 1949, has a 62,000 square-foot materials recovery facility in Cutler where it collects hazardous waste, green waste, e-waste and construction and demolition waste and buys back used bottles and cans.

The company also provides curbside waste pickup in unincorporated areas of Tulare and Fresno counties while arranging recycling services for businesses to help them meet new state mandates.
