Central Valley employment falls in March

Valley unemployment rates increased in March as agriculture's hiring cycle hit another low with less farm jobs compared to February in the state.

In Fresno County, the March unemployment rate was 18.4%, compared to 18.1% in February, reported the state Employment Development Department. March's rate for Fresno County is exactly the same as it was in the same month of 2010.

The other three Central Valley counties also saw more people out of work in March compared to February:

• Kings County, 18.4% (18% in Feb.)

• Madera County, 17.2% (16.4% in Feb.)

• Tulare County, 18.7% (18.1% in Feb.)

The statewide unemployment rate for March is 12%, down from 12.1% in February. Despite the slightly better showing of jobs, California's employment in agriculture dropped by 1,600 jobs between February and March.
