Fresno StateMore course sections will be available to students of California State University, Fresno this fall with the announcement of a $2.9-million share in federal stimulus money.

The stimulus is the latest allocation of $50.9 million in funds the California State University (CSU) system pledged to its 23 campuses in order to provide more course options for students.

Four thousand classes were added in the spring with the first apportionment of $25.6 million while 81,000 additional classes are expected for the fall 2010 term.

According to CSU, Fresno President John D. Welty, the money may also help to reduce an $8.5-million deficit at the university that may result in cutting 64 full-time equivalent faculty positions. Welty said additional cost cutting recommendations will be incorporated into the Fresno State's budget planning that will be completed as soon as the coming year's state fiscal picture becomes clearer.
