I don't want to be the next blogger waxing rhapsodic about how lame or awesome Fresno really is because there's a lot of that that going on right now. But thanks to a recent survey ranking my hometown as one of the worst for business, and a recent piece in USA Today (written by former Business Journal editor Valerie Gibbons), Fresnans are once again gathering pitchforks and torches to either slam Fresno or the rest of the country.

With government taking an ever-expanding role in the U.S. economy these days (financial bailouts, Cash for Clunkers, the auto industry, etc.), it's good to take a step back and realize that the markets always function better when they are free.

The business community has united in a campaign to convince consumers of the benefits of buying local. Our local cities and counties would do well to jump on the bandwagon.

The Valley is full of well-qualified, reputable professionals in areas such as architecture, construction, technology and many other disciplines that compete for public-sector jobs. Yet, they are often overlooked in favor of out-of-town service providers who take taxpayer dollars with them once the job is done.

Ladies and gentlemen! I have in my very hand a miraculous device. With this technological wonder, I can travel the world, see a movie, compile office documents, take and edit photos, build a house, order dinner, listen to a concert, keep track of the stock market and play darts.

Oh, and it can make phone calls, too.
