The Department of the Interior announced today it is boosting water deliveries to west side farmers from 5% to 25% thanks to additional rain and snow.
According to a news release from Secretary of Interior Ken Salazar, this March allocation update usually comes out around March 22, but it was moved up "at the urging of Senators [Dianne] Feinstein and [Barbara] Boxer and Congressmen [Jim] Costa and [Dennis] Cardoza. The Department of Interior said it is working to secure additional water for west side San Joaquin Valley farmers, representing new supplies for 2010 not previously available to the west side. “This is good news for the large majority of water users served by the Central Valley Project, but we realize that South-of-Delta agricultural water service contractors face serious water supply challenges, in part as a result of three consecutive years of drought and operational constraints imposed on the CVP to address water quality and fish species of concern. That’s why we continue to work hard and make progress towards providing an additional 8 to 10 percent for agriculture south of the Delta,” said Secretary Salazar.
